What is the skin and what are its different layers? The skin is the outer covering of the body comprised of three layers, the protective layer (epidermis), the thicker middle layer which contains support structures such as blood vessels, nerves, sweat glands and hair follicles (dermis), and an inner layer that contains larger blood vessels and fatty tissue (subcutaneous). What is the function of the skin? The skin is the largest organ of the body and comprises approximately 15% of total body weight. It protects the body from infection, radiation from the sun and exhales gasses produced by the normal function of the body. It prevents excessive water loss, helps regulate body temperature (as it is gas-permeable) and protects the internal organs. What is Kelo-cote®? Kelo-cote® is a lightweight, self-drying silicone gel for the treatment of scars. Kelo-cote® has been shown to flatten, soften and smooth scars, relieve the itching and discomfort of scars, as well as reduce the discoloration associated with scars. What is Kelo-cote® made of? Kelo-cote® is a patented proprietary formula containing bio-inert and bio-compatible silicone compounds, namely polysiloxane, silicone dioxide and non-volatile silicone components. It is therefore intended for the use on children or people with sensitive skin. How does Kelo-cote® work? Kelo-cote® rapidly dries to form a sheet; this silicone gel sheet layer is gas permeable, flexible and waterproof. Kelo-cote® forms a bond with the stratum corneum (the outer layer of dead skin cells) forming a protective barrier against chemical, physical and microbial invasion of the scar site while assisting with hydration. This creates an environment which allows the scar to mature through normalized collagen synthesis cycles, and improves the physiological and cosmetic appearance of the scar. How long will it take for a scar to improve? When using Kelo-cote®, the recommended minimum treatment time is 60–90 days. Larger and older scars may take longer and continued use is recommended if improvement is still seen after the initial 90 days. How has Kelo-cote® to be used? * Ensure that the affected area is clean and dry. * Apply Kelo-cote® to the area as a very thin layer and allow to dry. * Apply Kelo-cote® once daily, or twice daily to areas exposed to abrasion. * For maximum effect, Kelo-cote® Gel should have 24 hour contact with the skin. * Once dry, Kelo-cote® can be covered with pressure garments, sun block or cosmetics. If Kelo-cote® has not dried within 4–5 minutes, you have probably used too much. Gently remove the excess and allow the drying process to continue. On what types of scars is Kelo-cote® effective? Kelo-cote® Advanced Formula Scar Gel is intended for the management of old and new hypertrophic and keloid scars resulting from general surgical procedures, trauma, wounds and burns. Does Kelo-cote® work on keloid and hypertrophic scars? In serevral medical studies Kelo-cote® has been proven to flatten, soften, smooth and dramatically improve the discoloration noted with these types of aggressive scars. What are the advantages of using Kelo-cote® gel instead of silicone sheets? Kelo-cote has all the benefits of silicone sheets without the problems. Tape allergies, difficulty of use, and the potential for bacteria growth between the sheet and the skin are all problems inherent with sheeting Is Kelo-cote® safe to use on children? Yes, Kelo-cote® is completely bio-compatible and is intended for the use for both, children and people with sensitive skin. Are there any side effects associated with the use of Kelo-cote®? There have been no side effects observed with the proper use of Kelo-cote®. The ingredients in Kelo-cote® are completely compatible with human biology. Does Kelo-cote® have any odor associated with it? No, Kelo-cote® is 100% odor free. Are there any restrictions on the use of Kelo-cote®? Kelo-cote® is for external use only. Direct contact with eyes, mucous membranes, third degree burns and open wounds should be avoided. Kelo-cote® should not be used on dermatological conditions that disrupt the integrity of the skin. Is Kelo-cote® an effective acne treatment? Kelo-cote® has been used effectively for the treatment of scars resulting from acne and chickenpox. However, Kelo-cote® is not indicated for the use on active acne or broken skin. How do I clean the affected area before re-applying Kelo-cote®? The Kelo-cote layer will dissipate as your skin cells naturally exfoliate, approximately in 24 hours. If necessary, gently washing with soap and water should remove any remainder. It is not necessary to remove the entire Kelo-cote layer prior to re-application. Will Kelo-cote® help heal older scars, or just new scars? Kelo-cote can help heal older scars as well as newer scars. Best results will occur when there is still healing taking place. Signs of healing include redness, itching, irritation, and continuing growth of the scar. If any of these signs are present, regardless of the age of the scar, Kelo-cote can improve the appearance of the scar.
